Welcome to the Judith Basin of Central Montana, the headquarters for Stevenson/Basin. Our cattle run on big country ranging from the rolling grass plains and river breaks to the rougher mountain country of the Snowy and Judith Mountains. Our horses have to be intelligent, big-hearted, sound-footed, tough enough for all-day. The brood mares that we have assembled were selected for these mandatory traits.
We want to continually produce a product that will work in today’s horse industry. For that reason I spend the time to train these horses to make a sound, level-headed, horse that can work for almost everyone.
My training philosophy is this: I want these horses to be trained well enough that they can lay-off for a long time and still remember what they were taught. I want horses that inspire confidence for the rider and the horses. I want horses that are bred to be kind and gentle. I am teaching these horses more than the standard “30 days on a colt”. My horses will be sold at a point where they know all the basics and can be ridden on the ranch or trail with confidence or go right into finish training for showing.

Our brood-mare band is both savvy and ranchy. Savvy, meaning that they can foal unassisted, protect their foals, stay clear of wire and bring home a healthy, beautiful foal. They are also ranchy, meaning they look like ranch horses, they can go all day and not break down, they are sturdy and solid-boned so they can do the work a ranch requires. These mares also have excellent foot and leg structure, and a lot of capacity. They have wintered and foaled in the Snowy Mountains unassisted. They brought home beautiful foals.
